“Path Through Sycamore” 9 x 12 oil on linen board. Unframed. Signed by the artist.
Cynthia Britain is one of five signature members who co-founded the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association in 1996.
Jean Stern, art historian and executive director of the Irvine Art Museum, describes Cynthia’s work as an excellent example of the Southern California plein air tradition, which is concerned almost exclusively with landscape showing little or no figures. “It is in fact, painting the natural light and how that light shows the landscape,” Jean explains. “Cynthia has a gift for soft color and her work is characterized by astute placement of areas of restrained color with comparatively little attention to trivial detail.”
Cynthia is both a teacher and a painter. She is a popular instructor in plein air Workshops in California and France, including Monet’s Garden in Giverny.
I started painting in the year 2000 and Cynthia was the instructor at my first plein air workshop. We painted in Laguna Canyon. Her demonstration painting of the green oaks and violet mountains was an inspiration to me.
